Spring 2013 Course Registration

October 15th, 2012 Comments off

The Spring 2013 Course Schedule for IIT will be published on the web on Monday, October 22, 2012. Registration for students with disabilities, athletes, and ROTC Cadets and Midshipmen begins on Friday, November 2, 2012, with tiered registration for all students based on class beginning on Monday, November 5, 2012. Once again, to help with advance course planning, we’ve posted two documents to help folks with course planning: the Spring 2013 DRAFT Course Matrix, which is a quick visual reference of courses offered for Fall 2012, organized by campus (pictured at right) , and a revised full listing of all ITM courses which will tell you what term each course is normally offered in, and if it is offered online.

Some things to note:

  • IF you were planning to take ITM 302 at the Rice Campus, please take ITMD 456 Introduction to Open Source Operating Systems (CompTIA Linux+) in its place. We expect a future curriculum change with ITMD 456 replacing the current ITM 302 requirement, and ITMD 456 will be an allowable substitute for ITM 302 for those taking it this term.
  • The topic of the ITMT 495 / ITMT 595 Topics in IT course at the Main Campus on Thursday evenings will be Introduction to Health Care IT, taught by Professor Noland Joiner, former VP and CIO of GE Healthcare IT.
  • ITMD 412 Advanced Structured and Systems Programming (advanced C++) will run early on Friday evenings (5-7:40pm) at the Rice Campus and will also be online. The prerequisite is ITM 312 and the course will be taught by Associate Professor Sam Shamsuddin.
  • IPRO 497-338 will run 2:30 to 5pm on Wednesdays at the Rice Campus, taught by Professor Dan Tomal of the Industrial Technology and Management Program and Associate Professor Jeremy Hajek of ITM. Encourage your friends in other majors to sign up; they can follow it up that evening with ITMD 456 Introduction to Open Source Operating Systems (CompTIA Linux+) or ITMT 492 Embedded Systems and Reconfigurable Logic Design as a free or or technical elective in their major.

Finding Our Summer 2012 Course Offerings

April 25th, 2012 Comments off

Folks seem to be having trouble getting to the ITM summer course listings through MyIIT. If you go into MyIIT, select Look Up Classes, select Search By Term: Summer 2012, select Information Tech and Mgmt, and click on “Course Search”, it will then show you a list of ALL courses offered by the department, whether they are offered in the current term or not; it is NOT a list of courses offered this summer. If you select “Advanced Search” instead of “Course Search”, than select Information Tech and Mgmt, then click on “Section Search”, then it will show you the full list of courses offered this summer. OR just to make your life easier, just see the following PDF file: Information Technology and Management Summer 20912 Course Offerings

ITM course offerings for Fall 2012 can be previewed at http://www.itm.iit.edu/data/ITM_Draft_Course_Matrix_Fall2012.pdf . This is a DRAFT and is not an official university schedule!

Note that all courses 400-level and higher will now have four-character Subject Codes. There is one new course offered for fall, ITMO 557 Storage Technologies: “Modern enterprise data storage technologies and architectures are examined in depth. Topics include storage devices, file systems, storage networks, virtual storage, RAID, NAS, SAN and other current enterprise-level storage models. Storage management, replication, deduplication, storage tiers, backups, as well as fundamentals of business continuity, application workload, system integration, and storage/system administration are addressed. Specific knowledge and skills required to configure networked storage to include archive, backup, and restoration technologies are covered. Prerequisite: ITMO 301 or ITMO 302” This course is pretty much a “must-have” for everyone in the Data Center or System Administration specializations.

Registration for Fall will open on Monday April 9th.

New ITM Subject Codes

February 17th, 2012 Comments off

When the Fall 2012 course schedule is published, you will notice something different: instead of ITM, courses in our program will have four-character “subject codes”. They’ll still all start with ITM but the fourth character will indicate a broad subject area. The new subject codes are:
ITMD Development: Application development, web development, multimedia, data management
ITMM Management: Management of information technology, business, law and ethics
ITMO Operations: Networking, communications, operating systems and system administration
ITMS Security: Security and forensics
ITMT Theory and Technology: Theory, systems, system design & general topics in IT
Initially all courses will still have the same number as they did before the transition, but new courses will gradually begin to overlap numbers so you will need to read both the subject code and the number to make sure it’s the correct course. 100-, 200- and 300-level courses will retain the familiar three-letter ITM subject code. We know it’s a bit of a hassle, but really, this is a good thing: it only happened because our program is so healthy that we were in danger of running out of course numbers!
