Safety Alert

February 17, 2011 author:

Since January, there have been 3 reported incidents of robbery and 1 attempt all involving IIT students. The incidents have occurred in the evening hours and on campus. They occurred at 31st & Wabash and 32nd, 33rd and State Street. On Thursday, February, 10th, IITPSD apprehended an offender involved in a robbery. This offender subsequently confessed to other robberies in the area. We also recovered most of the property that was taken. Public Safety continues to increase patrols and is working diligently with the Chicago Police Department to blanket the area to reduce the number of on campus incidents.

Public safety encourages the student body to request an escort if they feel unsafe or if something feels out of the ordinary. Students can request an escort by calling the non-emergency phone number (312) 808-6300. Students can also visit the Public Safety office in Farr Hall to request an escort.

The IIT community is urged to be vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious activities or persons. Although an offender was apprehended, it should be assumed that conditions may continue to exist that others may pose a threat to the community.

 Everyone is reminded to:Â

  • Plan your trip in advance and use well-traveled and well lighted routes.
  • Avoid dark or deserted areas. Never take short cuts (alleys, parks, or vacant lots) especially at night.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If you think you are being followed, cross the street, change direction, or go to a public place where others are present.
  • Walk with confidence and always keep moving.Â
  • Avoid talking on a cell phone or wearing headphones.
  • Try to walk with a partner or group, especially at night.
  • Women, keep your purse-strap over your shoulder and purse under your arm; Men, keep your wallet in your front pocket.
  • Always keep one hand free.
  • Stop by Public Safety for a campus map of the Emergency Blue phone locations.
