On Friday, November 7th the SASDI office, the Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion, IIT Dining Services, and the Office of Spiritual Life and Service Learning collaborated to host the 5th annual RTW Vet Center Dinner in The Commons.
The RTW Vet Center is a shelter and community center on the south side (5536 S. King Drive). The center originally opened to serve meals to veterans in the neighborhood and has grown to a two-facility shelter that also serves 65,000 hot meals to individuals in the Chicago area and many other services.
The goal of the evening was to give these people something they don’t normally have–the chance to go out for dinner somewhere other than the shelter. In addition to the dinner, there was live music, crafting and free books for children, and an awards ceremony. This event was a great opportunity to honor RTW members, as well as IIT ROTC and Student Veterans.
A special thanks to IIT Dining Services for donating the meal. We are already looking forward to next year’s RTW dinner! You can learn more about all of the great work the RTW Vet Center is doing to empower Veterans and the homeless here.
