Parent University was created to provide parents of first-generation, low-income aspiring college students with the knowledge and resources needed to support their children throughout the college preparation and admissions process. Ultimately, helping these parents understand that, with the right tools, college is attainable for their children while illuminating a pathway to their enrollment at Illinois Tech. Parent University upholds Illinois Tech’s strategic vision in being a positive influence within the city of Chicago.
The pilot Parent University was held in March and covered basic topics related to college preparation, admissions, and financial aid. The event was well-received by the attendees and will be held again on June 20th. This time children (ages 6-12), are welcome at our Kids Korner, and will participate in engaging and fun STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) activities, guided by IIT students, while their parents attend sessions.
All sessions are free of charge and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Topics for discussion include: The college selection, application, and admission process. Financial and community resources. Community Resources (Chicago City of Learning Initiative).
