Public Safety Tip of the Day: Water Safety

 

Insist on Adult Supervision.

• Swim in areas where there are lifeguards when possible.
• Constantly watch your children in or near the water.
• Keep young children within arm’s reach.
• Assign adults to watch children at social events.
• Never drink or allow the use of alcohol or other drugs during water and boating activities or while supervising children.

Learn to Swim.

• If you don’t know how to swim well, find someone to teach you.
• Learn to tread water for at least 10 minutes.
• Make sure your children learn to swim. Upgrade their swimming skills each year. Check about lessons at your local pool or lifeguarded beach.

Know the Water.

• Make sure the water is safe for diving. When in doubt, don’t dive or jump.
• Check for hidden objects, currents and water plants.
• Be aware that cold water can kill, even on hot summer days. Stay close to shore and rest if you are cold or tired.

Public Safety Tip of the Day:

 

 

SECURITY IN THE WORKPLACE

 

PROTECT YOUR THINGS •    Keep all personal belongings, backpacks, briefcases or purses close to where you are working. If you leave the area, even for only a short time, secure them in a locked drawer or cabinet, or have a coworker watch them.

 
AVOID CONFRONTATIONS •     Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into arguments or shouting matches with coworkers or the public.

 

SAFETY & SECURITY •   Be alert to suspicious persons in your area. If anything appears to be not quite right, contact authorities.

 

Remember:  The safety and security of your workplace is everyone’s responsibility—it’s a team effort.

Public Safety Tip of the Day:

 

Move Right for Sirens & Lights
When the Fire Department is called to an emergency it is important that they respond quickly and safely.

If you are driving down the road and see the lights and sirens of an emergency vehicle in your rearview mirror, move to the right and stop to allow emergency vehicles to move easily down the road. Once the emergency vehicles have passed merge back into traffic when it is safe to begin driving.

Every time fire engines or aid cars are called to an emergency Fire Fighters are giving their all to help others. Do your part as a driver to help Fire Fighters do their job as quickly and safely as possible.

Public Safety Tip of the Day: Bicycle Safety:

Public Safety Tip of the Day: Bicycle Safety:

 

Bicycle helmet effectiveness

Head injuries account for:

• 60% of bicycle-related deaths
• Two-thirds of bicycle related hospitalizations
• One-third of bicycle related hospital ER visits
  (-NSKC, 2004)

Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85% and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88%:(-NEJM, 1989)

• Wear a bicycle helmet every time you ride.
• Make sure your bicycle helmet has a “CPSC” or “Snell” sticker inside. This is your guarantee that it has met the most rigorous safety standards.
• Purchase a new helmet after a crash, or after 5 years of use.

Public Safety Tip of the Day regarding personal effects:

Good Afternoon,

 

On Friday, April 12^th, between the hours of 12pm and 1pm, there was a theft reported to IITPSD.

 

Specifically, the theft occurred on the 19^th floor (General Counsel).  

 

The theft occurred inside an office area when some of the offices were occupied by staff.

 

As a reminder, although it may be somewhat tedious and at times overkill, I ask that all of you;

 

•  Do Not leave any personal property unattended for any period of time.

 

• Do Not rely on someone else to “watch” your property while you use the restroom or grab a quick bite to eat.

 

• Take ownership of your personal property. 

 

• Secure your belongings either by taking them with you or securing it in your desk, office, or credenzas.

 

• Remain alert and cognizant of your surroundings.  If someone looks suspicious or appears that they don’t belong, contact Public Safety at 8-6300 or 8-6363 .

Public Safety Tip of the Day for Visitors and Tourists:

While staying in a Hotel:

• Never automatically open your door when a knock is heard. Know your visitor’s identity prior to admittance. Use your peephole, if available, or talk through the locked door. If someone claims they are from maintenance, security or a hotel employee, phone the front desk to make sure the visitor is legitimate.
• Valuables should not be left in the room, you or the people who service your room may occasionally forget to lock it. Put valuables in a signed and sealed envelope and leave it in the room safe or the front desk safe deposit box.
• Be alert for suspicious persons in the hotel hallways. Report them to the manager.
• Do not advertise how long you will be away from your room. Leave a light on or a TV or radio playing to give the impression that the room is occupied.

Public Safety Tip of the Day for Visitors and Tourists:

While staying in a Hotel:

• Book hotel reservations using only first, middle initial and last name, particularly women traveling alone.
• Leave an itinerary and expected return date with friends or family.
• Do not carry large amounts of cash. Use traveler’s checks. Keep a record of traveler’s check numbers, credit card numbers, photocopy of passport and other valuable documents separate from originals.
• Keep room numbers private. Don’t sign bar or restaurant checks with your room number. Keep track of room keys. If a key is lost, ask for a different room, or ask for the locks to be changed.
• Use all locks on hotel door, particularly the double lock. Consider bringing with you a motel/hotel portable lock. Always lock the door when leaving.
• When returning to your room, make sure that you have your room key out and ready.

Public Safety Tip of the Day for Visitors and Tourists:

While Driving:

• If you stop overnight, remove bags and other valuables from the car and take them inside. · Try to park in well lit, populated areas. When returning to your vehicle, check spaces between cars and check around your vehicle before approaching. Have your keys ready to unlock the door, and check the back seat before entering.
• Even if you are only leaving for a minute, lock all doors, trucks, windows and sunroofs.
• Never leave attractive packages or any valuable items in view. Remove them from the car when possible. If you must leave them, lock them in the trunk before you arrive at the parking location. A thief may be watching.
• Purses, wallets, checkbooks and other credential items should never be left in an unattended vehicle under any circumstances.
• When parking in an attended lot, leave only the ignition key with the attendant.
