Situational Awareness January 28, 2013

January 28, 2013 author: Comments off

Hello,

Over the weekend, IITPSD took 2 theft reports from Crown Hall.

On Saturday, January 25th, at approximately 1:00pm,  an unidentified male black,  18-22 yrs old, wearing all black, entered Crown Hall and took a bag containing a laptop computer.

Although the building was locked, the offender was allowed access by another student.  This is commonly referred to as “piggy backing”.

On Sunday, January 26th, at approximately 4:00 pm, IITPSD took a second theft report involving an unattended bag containing a laptop computer.

Last week, students at Crown, granted access to two male offenders.  Once inside, the suspects stole a student’s purse.

One of the suspects was subsequently arrested by IITPSD.

IITPSD advises that students need to secure ALL their belongings and leave nothing unattended.

Do not allow unknown individuals into secured buildings and spaces.

Whereas it might appear rude to make someone swipe their ID card, this ensures the integrity of the security applications and ensures your safety.

Please contact IITPSD immediately to report any suspicious individuals or activity. 312.808.6363.

Thank you/

Public Crime Log. Week Ending September, 28, 2012

September 28, 2012 author: Comments off

Hello All,

We are again experiencing an increase in bicycle thefts on campus.

Although IITPSD has increased their patrols, we are seeing that the majority of thefts are occurring as a result of the improper locking mechanism.

We are finding that students are using cable locks which can be easily cut.

We strongly urge all students to purchase a U-Lock. We have worked out a deal with the bookstore in that they will give you 20% of the price of the lock.

Please continue to be vigilant in securing and safeguarding your property while on and off campus.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

Public Crime Blog Week Ending September 14, 2012

September 14, 2012 author: Comments off

Hello,

I hope all is well as the Fall semester is in full swing.

Although Public Safety made 3 apprehensions last week for bike thefts, additional thefts were reported.

The primary cause is utilizing the wrong locking device and the incorrect placement of the lock.

This will all be addressed at our Public Safety Forum on Tuesday, September 18,  in the MTCC at 11am.

Lastly, despite what rumors you may have heard (if any), there was a reported theft at 7 Eleven early this morning.

It was a simple shoplifting incident which resulted in the successful apprehension and arrest of 3 individuals.

There were no injuries and no weapons were used.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing all of you at our Forum/

Have a safe weekend.

Campus Robbery

At approximately 2:30 am on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 a robbery occurred at the 7-Eleven in the MTCC on Main Campus.

Two unidentified males entered the store, demanded money from the clerk and then assaulted him during a confrontation. IIT Public Safety officers responded and, along with the Chicago Police Department, saturated the area in an attempt to locate the suspects but were unsuccessful.

The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital and was released after treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

7-Eleven reopened for customers at 4 am.

The Chicago Police Department is working with 7-Eleven and the IITPSD to apprehend the suspects.

Public Safety advises that this was an isolated incident but wants to remind the IIT community to continually exercise caution when on and off campus.

Contact IIT Public Safety at 312.808.6363 (8-6363 on campus) to report any suspicious person(s), vehicle(s), or activities around campus.
