Public Safety Tip of the Day:
Whether you live on campus or off campus, protect yourself from harm.
Keep your doors and windows Locked, even while at home.
Don’t allow strangers into your home or apartment building.
Be Alert to strangers loitering around your building. If you see something suspicious, contact Public Safety or the Police if you live off campus.
Get to know your roommates and their friends.
Never leave a spare key under a mat, above the door frame, or anywhere else you think nobody will find it.
Keep your windows and doors locked, even when you are at home.

Before reading, please note that this incident was reported immediately to Public Safety who responded to the scene. Based on the information they received, it was determined that there was no immediate danger on the Main Campus.
Late Saturday evening, a white sedan was traveling southbound on State Street near State Street Village when one of the occupants, age 16-19, produced a small toy/bb handgun and shot it three times in the direction of a student. The vehicle immediately drove away. The student was not hit or injured in any way. The student contacted Public Safety who responded to the scene. There is no indication this was a real firearm, based on both the witness account and a search of the area. We are asking everyone in the IIT community to continue to be aware of their surroundings and to report any similar activity to Public Safety

Public Safety Tip of the Day: Public Transportation
Don’t Fall Asleep while on the bus or train
Keep your belongings in your lap.
Know the Schedules and the routes of your destinations.
Choose a seat near the bus driver of train conductor.
Avoid isolated buses or train stops.
Utilize public transportation during peak travel times.
Avoid using phones or personal electronics while on board.

Public Safety Tip of the Day:
Electronic devices, namely cell phones, are often the object of desire by thieves. You can lessen your chances of being victimized by practicing the following:
- Refrain from using your cell phone in public, such as walking down the street or on public transportation.
- Do not leave your cell phone out in the open, such as on the table top next to you.
- Never leave valuables, especially cell phones, in plain view in your vehicle….even for a second!
- Keep your electronics concealed by keeping them in your pocket or purse.
- Be aware of your surroundings.

Public Safety Tip of the Day: ATM Safety
- Always be aware of suspicious persons or vehicles in the area of the ATM. Trust your gut feeling. If things don’t feel right, avoid that ATM.
- Have ATM card out of your wallet or purse before approaching the ATM.
- Don’t write your ATM personal identification number on your card or keep the number in your wallet.
- When entering your personal identification number, try to keep the numbers from the view of others.
- Don’t withdraw large amounts of cash.
- Secure your money at the ATM. Don’t walk away with money in hand.
- If a robber demands your money, don’t argue or fight with the suspect. Note the robber’s description and give the robber the money.

Public Safety Tip of the Day: Water Safety
Insist on Adult Supervision.
- Swim in areas where there are lifeguards when possible.
- Constantly watch your children in or near the water.
- Keep young children within arm’s reach.
- Assign adults to watch children at social events.
- Never drink or allow the use of alcohol or other drugs during water and boating activities or while supervising children.
Learn to Swim.
- If you don’t know how to swim well, find someone to teach you.
- Learn to tread water for at least 10 minutes.
- Make sure your children learn to swim. Upgrade their swimming skills each year. Check about lessons at your local pool or lifeguarded beach.
Know the Water.
- Make sure the water is safe for diving. When in doubt, don’t dive or jump.
- Check for hidden objects, currents and water plants.
- Be aware that cold water can kill, even on hot summer days. Stay close to shore and rest if you are cold or tired.

Public Safety Tip of the Day:
SECURITY IN THE WORKPLACE
PROTECT YOUR THINGS • Keep all personal belongings, backpacks, briefcases or purses close to where you are working. If you leave the area, even for only a short time, secure them in a locked drawer or cabinet, or have a coworker watch them.
AVOID CONFRONTATIONS • Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into arguments or shouting matches with coworkers or the public.
SAFETY & SECURITY • Be alert to suspicious persons in your area. If anything appears to be not quite right, contact authorities.
Remember: The safety and security of your workplace is everyone’s responsibility—it’s a team effort.

Public Safety Tip of the Day:
Move Right for Sirens & Lights
When the Fire Department is called to an emergency it is important that they respond quickly and safely.
If you are driving down the road and see the lights and sirens of an emergency vehicle in your rearview mirror, move to the right and stop to allow emergency vehicles to move easily down the road. Once the emergency vehicles have passed merge back into traffic when it is safe to begin driving.
Every time fire engines or aid cars are called to an emergency Fire Fighters are giving their all to help others. Do your part as a driver to help Fire Fighters do their job as quickly and safely as possible.
