November 7, 2011 author: Comments off

Hello All,

I apologize for not posting this past week.

Our Blog experienced technical difficulties and then the following week our email server was down.

I am happy to report that all problems have been fixed.

PSD participated in a Forum with the IIT community.  Although the turnout was not as high as we anticipated, the message was well received to those that attended.

Public Safety will be scheduling a meeting with all residents of Prairie Shores, Lake Meadows and the Commons. We will discuss current crime trends and other issues relating to Public Safety.  Look for the announcements in the next coming weeks.

I encourage all of you to post a question or comment on our blog.

Thank you and remember that safety and security is a shared responsibility.

October 14, 2011 author: Comments off

Hello,

IITPSD had a very busy and productive week.

IITPSD reported 4 Robberies and 1 attempted Robbery beginning late Friday evening into Saturday afternoon.

A group of 4 individuals were responsible.

Through the joint efforts of IITPSD and CPD, all 4 suspects were apprehended late Saturday afternoon.

A recent rash of laptop thefts have occurred in Life Science, E1 and the Stuart building.

That suspect was apprehended on Tuesday.

Although, the offenders have been apprehended, this does NOT mean that the threat of theft or harm has been eliminated.

IITPSD continues to urge the IIT community to be cognizant of your surroundings and to take advantage of the escort service that we provide.

Safeguard you valuables and remember that security is a shared responsibility.

IITPSD will be hosting a Forum in the next upcoming weeks.

Look for it!

We are seeing a rise in theft reports around campus.

Individuals are leaving their property unattended for short and long periods of time.

It is imperative that you take your property with you and if you are in an office,  that you close and lock your door.

Continue to be mindful of your surroundings and contact IITPSD if you spot any suspicious activity.

Hello,

Incidents are beginning to sprout around campus.

Please ensure that when securing your bicycle to the bike racks, that you are utilizing a U-Lock.  These can be purchased in the Campus Bookstore.

Continue to take your property with you and never leave it unattended for any length of time.

A short bathroom break or quick trip to the vending machine is the perfect opportunity for a thief to take your property.

It may be an inconvenience but in the end it will be worth it.

Stop by Farr Hall for additional information on safety awareness tips.

Enjoy your weekend.

August 19, 2011 author: 5 comments

Welcome Back.

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you back and to send a special welcome to all the new students here at IIT for the 1st time.

Every Friday, Illinois Institute of Technology’s Public Safety Department (IITPSD) will publish all the reports that were taken for the week. This will give the IIT community an overview of the types of activity that has occurred, the type of crimes that are being reported, and will offer prevention tips to safeguard your personal belongings and yourself while on campus.

IITPSD encourages feedback and comments on your experience and interaction with our department and welcomes suggestions on how to improve and make your educational experience safer while on campus.

Good Luck and have a very productive semester.

IITPSD Incident July 28, 2011

July 29, 2011 author: 5 comments

At approximately midnight the night of Wednesday on July 27th an IIT Public Safety officer approached a man who was standing near a car in the VanderCook parking lot on Main Campus. Two more men then approached the officer from the direction of Morton Park and surrounded the officer. One of the three men then pulled a firearm and shot at the officer, who took cover behind one of the cars in the lot. The suspects immediately fled, the officer was unharmed and no additional shots were fired.

Chicago Police Department was notified and arrived on the scene. The bullet, which was lodged in one of the parked cars, was recovered and the incident is currently under police investigation.

The IIT Public Safety Department reminds the university community to be vigilant when on campus and to immediately report any suspicious activity and/or persons to Public Safety at 312-808-6363 or call 911 for the Chicago Police.

Public Safety encourages all members of the IIT community to take a common-sense approach when walking on or off IIT property by:

• Staying alert to your surroundings
• Keeping valuables out of view (GPS units, loose change, cell-phones, CDs, etc.)
• Contacting Public Safety for an escort if you feel uneasy about traveling alone

IIT Public Safety officers work day and night to keep our campus safe, and the active involvement of everyone in the IIT community strengthens campus safety.
